The Warlord is the first book in a new series by Gena Showalter called Rise of the Warlords. As a long time fan of her Lords of the Underworld series, I was eager to see what this new series would offer. But even without having the background of reading her other books, I feel like the premise on the cover was eye catching enough to lure any new reader into her world!

What’s it About?

Taliyah Skyhawk has been raised since birth to seek the role of Harpy general. Despite the archaic rule of needing to remain a virgin in order to lead, she refuses to give up on her dream. But her plans are lead astray when Alaroc Phaethon, leader of the Astra Planeta ransacks her home world searching for a sacrificial bride to please his God and gain greater power. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Taliyah accepts the role as his bride to keep her people safe. It is a battle of wills between this instant husband and wife, however, the question of who will walk away alive from this marriage remains.

My Thoughts

In Alaroc, we are introduced to a character that is brutish and rude. Definitely a proponent of machismo to the highest! I wasn’t a fan of his initial interactions with Taliyah and felt the stirring of attraction between them may have been forced somewhat. Especially with the way that Taliyah was presented in the beginning. However as the story progresses, their dynamic starts to make more sense. The ending was satisfying in all the best ways and did the all important task of leaving you asking, what will happen next in this world.

Overall Impression

The elements of fantasy are given a refreshing take in this new world Gena Showalter has built. As has been my experience thus far in her books, you are left excited to see what will happen to the other characters who have had their own budding stories built into the background. I am a sucker for love-hate and this novel definitely does not disappoint. Give this book a try if you are looking to experience a world of paranormal fantasy where a redeemable alpha-male forms a love-hate relationship with a dominant female lead with worlds and civilizations hanging in the balance.
