Book Review: The Immortal by Gena Showalter

If you follow my blog stream then you know I already read the first installment of the Rise of the Warlords novels and loved it. So you KNOW I was more than ready for the second book’s release! Gena Showalter did not disappoint in this continuation of the Astra storyline and I throughly enjoyed Halo’s story.

What’s It About?

Halo Phaninon is the next Astra warlord set to complete his task to guarantee ascension and power for both himself and his brethren. All he has to do? Kill twelve of the deadliest mythological monsters in history…in twenty-four hours. After his treacherous upbringing that made him more of an emotionless machine than man, Halo feels more than ready for the challenge. That is until he finds himself stuck in a time loop forced to relieve the same day with new horrors and an unexpected beauty who awakens desires and passions that he thought he could no longer possess.

Ophelia Falconcrest is a harpymph known as the constant screw up and “flunk out” with zero kills. Her life thus far has been a constant stream of almosts, and what could have beens. But when she becomes stuck in a time loop that forces her to relieve her murder each day, the opportunity to exceed expectations and prove herself appears. Will Ophelia go for it even though it may mean sabotaging any hope of a future with Halo?

My Thoughts

I throughly enjoyed the humor of Showalter’s characters and it gave you a nice respite from the conflict in the story. The back and forth of Halo’s and Ophelia’s relationship was well paced to make the connection between them believable. The scene descriptions were so vivid and tantalizing. The passion was scorching between these two! This was a fun read with a unique dynamic between the couple that made this story take an original spin I haven’t read before. The ending was quite satisfying and once again, made you wonder where the storyline is going next!

Overall Impression

Gena Showalter weaves a tale that has you turning the pages and surprising yourself by how fast you get to the end. I couldn’t put it down! If you are looking for a scorcher of a book filled with humor, romance, and action, look no further than The Immortal.
