We are continuing the journey into the evolving situation in the Dark Olympus series. Dark Restraint by Katee Robert tells the story of the Minotaur and Ariadne, the caged daughter of Minos. I was surprised that these two were chosen as the main focus of this next installment!

What’s It About?
After betraying her father, Ariadne Vitalis is left to rely on the kindness and protection of Olympus. But in this city, nothing comes freely and Ariadne has to marry Dionysus to keep her protection. The only problem? Her heart already belongs to another.
The Minotaur has always known Ariadne was his to claim. No matter how depraved or dirty the job, he has delivered for Minos. All with the promise that she would be his prize.
Ariadne knows that the Minotaur is an instrument of terror for her father. But no matter his misdeeds, she can’t deny the pull he has over her. When they are together a passion ignites that makes her reckless. Maybe even enough to let Olympus fall…
My Thoughts
I was kept engaged by the danger growing in the background of the love story. At times I felt like the dynamic between Asterion and Ariadne bordered on toxic so I became disengaged. Sometimes it felt like our hero, (or anti-hero) was manipulative with our heroine.
While I enjoyed the development of Ariadne, I still felt like I wasn’t rooting for her as much. So it took me longer to read this piece than some of the others in the series. But that speaks to the success of Robert to create characters that are unique and don’t repeat.
This novel was enjoyable to read for the progression of the overarching danger in the story. But I don’t think this pair had me as engaged in their love story as others in the series.
Overall Impression
Give the simmering love story between a lethal yet dedicated mercenary and a woman at odds with her conscience a try in Dark Restraint!
