As a self-identifying creative, I struggle sometimes with putting myself out there and can get self conscious about the things I make. But I believe that can sometimes be the biggest struggle of most creatives out there. When I saw this book, I couldn’t resist the siren call of learning to share my work in such easy tips.

What’s It About?

You are guided bit by bit through ten rules on how to become discoverable. The advice makes you reconsider your concept of what self-promotion looks like all while learning how to appreciate and value the process.

My Thoughts

This book is definitely a short and quick read. However, this doesn’t diminish the value of information in the book. The advice with the main ten rules also includes examples and stories to help you better grasp the point. I don’t want to give too much away from the book but I will share a couple that stood out to me.

One of the most shocking pieces of wisdom was to read obituaries to keep the concept of death being ever present in your mind. It acts as a source of inspiration and a reminder to not waste time. I don’t know if I will incorporate this into my daily life like the author but maybe weekly.

Share what you love, and the people who love the same things will find you.

-Austin Kleon

This nugget of advice was one of my biggest takeaways. The possibility of forming a community with people who love similar things makes the idea of sharing with others more enticing and less intimidating. I definitely finished this book feeling ready to share with the world!

Overall Impression

Ultimately, this is a go-to guide for people who fear sharing their work and hate self promotion. It’s your roadmap to get out of secrecy and learn to share your process and growth as an easier way to promote. I recommend this title to any of my fellow artists, writers, or other creatives who are struggling with sharing their work and self-promotion. This book is a definite confidence boost and motivation hot spot!
