I have been a fan of Ali Abdaal’s YouTube videos filled with productivity tips, book recommendations and general motivational tips for awhile now. The general energy of his videos are light hearted. They feature simplified graphics that are pleasing to the eye, and his voice is quite soothing to hear. When I saw that he wrote a book, I knew I had to support and give it a read.

What’s It About?

The world’s most followed productivity expert, Dr. Ali Abdaal, invites us to ask whether productivity—which is often thought to be full of hard work and the constant grind, could instead be…fun.

Through years of psychological research, he has come to find that science supports the idea that happiness can be a part of the path to success. Feeling good in pursuit of your desired goals can indeed lead to productivity!

My Thoughts

This book was thoughtfully planned out, broken into three main portions and subcategories of three. “Energisers,” what bring enjoyment to productivity, “blockers,” that feed into procrastination and “sustainers,” that help us continue to fulfill productivity.

Dr. Abdaal weaves inspiring stories from his own life, award winning scientists, founders, and others throughout his book. I definitely enjoyed that the tips given were presented as experiments to try. I plan to follow his advice to see which ones work best for me.

My favorite takeaway is the Wheel of Life combined with the 12 month celebration exercise. You take stock of categories of your life like relationships, work, and health broken into smaller segments. Relationships include family, friends and romance. Health has mind, body, and soul. While Work has growth, mission, and money.

You draw these segments on a circle. Then gauge where you are by how you filled in your satisfaction for each one. From there you can write out what you want to be celebrating from each segment a year from now. It definitely opened my eyes to some aspects of my life that are not where I would like it to be. It encouraged me to work to change them.

Overall Impression

The essence of the YouTube channel can be felt in the pages of this book. They add to the appeal of actually following the advice given.

For those looking to take a fresh look at how to be productive that isn’t filled with the common advice to simply grind harder and have more discipline, you won’t be disappointed with this book.

And to add to your productivity motivation, check out the YouTube Channel too!
