I enjoy a good mystery whether in film or a novel however this is my first time reading a novel by the famous Agatha Christie. But since Egypt was a part of the story, you KNOW I couldn’t wait to dive in!

What’s It About?

Wealthy, gorgeous, high-bred and charming, Linnet Ridgeway seems to have it all. London society can’t get enough of her and all that she has attained. On a wind of sudden romance, she marries a young Simon Doyle much to the surprise of everyone around her. He is a man of little money or status but despite this Linnet has fallen in love. They decide to honeymoon in Egypt on board a Nile cruise. However it is here they are relentlessly pursued by a spector from their shared pasts. By chance Hercule Poirot is on holiday and what a happy circumstance. A murder has occurred onboard that proves to be the first of many. Can he unravel who is the murderer before it is too late?

My Thoughts

The vivid descriptions made by Christie as to the Egyptian landscape drew me immediately into the story. After experiencing Egypt for myself, I can attest that she did the landscape justice. The pacing throughout the work is just right with each revelation seamlessly drawing you into the final reveal. The characters are well developed and multidimensional. You are not quite sure who to blame for the misfortunes on the boat but also intrigued enough by their personal histories to never be quite sure who is.

I believe Agatha Christie fully lives up to the hype. She masterfully weaves a mystery that keeps you guessing until the end. Each time you feel you have come to discover the truth you find yourself at a dead end. Christie has a mastery of misdirection and subtlety that makes this novel a treat for mystery fans.

Overall Impression

I recommend this book for those who love Egypt and the chance to act as a detective via a well written and intricately developed mystery. I believe this may be the first of many reviews of books by Agatha Christie that I will write.

Death on the Nile Movie Review

Death on the Nile

My Thoughts

The film adaptation pulls from the main plot points of the novel with some twists. It rewrites some of the characters while adding some new ones. I understood some of the updates made but was still somewhat disappointed some of the characters and their subplots were lost from the original. I will say the casting was well done and the cinematography beautiful. Give this movie a watch whether you read the novel or not, it is a definite treat for mystery and Egypt fans alike!
